Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences is organizing its first TEDx
AMSTERDAM – On Tuesday the 1st of October, FLOOR – the cultural and debate center of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) – is organizing its first edition of TEDxHvAmsterdam. The event takes place in the Kohnstammhall on the 9th floor of the Kohnstammhuis, one of the locations of AUAS. The theme of TEDxHvAmsterdam is The Producible Future. Because humanity stands at a crossroad: Will this be the best or the worst century to come? With TEDxHvAmsterdam, the AUAS focuses on these individuals, rebels and thinkers who stand out and will inspire our community to think big.
The program of TEDxHvAmsterdam contains various presentations from a range of speakers. Fashion designer Amber Jae Slooten shows that we can express ourselves without exploiting the planet and sheds a whole new light on our digital future. Human rights activist and digital expert Sobhi Khatib sees programmers as the designers of the future. He argues that it is crucial that ethical perspectives are included in this field. AUAS Teacher of the Year 2017 Youssef el Bouhassani believes in the power of artificial intelligence to find new ways to free humans from repetitive working and utilize our unique qualities. Researcher and lecturer Fiona Veraa produced a vision to create an true inclusive future where students from all backgrounds can meet, work, learn and grow together.
Additionally, three students have been selected to pitch their ideas. Fabrizio Brancacho Taico believes that there is an opportunity for social entrepreneurs to solve many societal issues, but that they need to be stimulated through economic structures. Part-time applied psychology student Anita Abaisa created a community to improve the socio-economic status of black women: the platform Black Ladies Talk. Last but not least, product design student Robbie van Dijk created a game to educate the next generation to learn about the possibilities of a sustainable future. Inspirational speaker and pedagogue Minchenu Maduro is the host of the event.
Anyone interested in inspiring stories and ideas is welcome. The event is open for the public and people can buy tickets through our website. “In times of digitization and artificial intelligence, this event is putting thinking power, creativity, and human influence first,” says Marte Rijsdijk, FLOOR’s project manager. TEDxHvAmsterdam is a new addition to the programming of the AUAS debate center FLOOR. “TED, the AUAS and FLOOR form a strong trinity. TED provides the concept, the AUAS offers knowledge and content, and FLOOR has the expertise to merge this into an event with relevance,” says Rijsdijk. In addition, the three parties pursue the same philosophy: inspire to work on creative solutions and sustainable innovations for the future.
AUAS has obtained a university license from TED, which offers the possibility to organize an independent TEDx event. “There are of course fixed guidelines. For example, we can sell 100 tickets max. But there will also be a live stream at the University of Amsterdam and the TEDx talks will be recorded so that they can be distributed later,” says Rijsdijk. Distribution takes place on the TEDxYouTube channel with more than 20 million subscribers. Moreover, the organizers were allowed to come up with a theme The Producible Future. “With the main vision of the AUAS of Creating Tomorrow we aimed for a theme that would highlight the power of individuals within our community to change our future for the good.” says Rijsdijk.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, often in the form of short talks delivered by leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED conferences, including our annual gathering in Vancouver, as well as TEDWomen, intimate TED Salons and thousands of independently organized TEDx events around the world. Videos of these talks are made available, free, on TED.com and other platforms. Audio versions of the talks from TED2019 will also be published to TED’s podcast TED Talks Daily, available on Apple Podcasts and all other podcast platforms.
TED’s open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; TEDx, which licenses thousands of individuals and groups to host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities; the Audacious Project, which surfaces and funds critical ideas that have the potential to impact millions of lives; TEDSummit, which gathers the most engaged members of the global TED community for brainstorms, discussions, performances, workshops and an eclectic program of mainstage talks; and the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED also has a library of original podcasts, including The TED Interview with Chris Anderson, Sincerely, X, and one of Apple Podcasts’ most downloaded new shows of 2018, WorkLife with Adam Grant.
